KOCHI: Ernakulam District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth on Thursday banned the Popular Front of India’s (PFI) rally, scheduled to be held in Perumbavoor on Sunday. The PFI was planning to carry out the rally as part of its campaign against the state government decision banning PFI’s Freedom Parade. According to police, the action was initiated after the recommendation made by police heads to ban the parade. The Collector’s order was circulated to all police officials stating that such a rally would disrupt the tranquility, peace and harmony of the place. As the chances for communal violence stand high in Perumbavoor and also on the backdrop of cases like palm chopping of a professor in Thodupuzha, such a rally has not been  permitted to carry out, the order stated. The ban is applicable only for the rally. The meeting which was announced earlier has been exempted from the ban. It will be held at Subhash Park on October 15 as announced earlier, said the officials. The Popular Front of India has decided to carry out three regional rallies in Thiruvananthapuram, Perumbavoor and Kozhikode as part of the one-month campaign ‘Freedom is a Birth Right’, from September 15 to October 15.
