Pay freedom fighter Rs 30K: HC to Govt
Delhi High Court on Thursday asked the Government to pay litigation cost of Rs 30,000 to 85-year-old freedom fighter Ashwini Kumar.

New Delhi: Delhi High Court on Thursday asked the Government to pay litigation cost of Rs 30,000 to 85-year-old freedom fighter Ashwini Kumar Mishra by March 14.

Directing the Union Home Ministry to pay the amount through a draft to Mishra, Justice S Murlidhar said, "it is a matter of concern that a Joint Secretary level officer is not aware of the time-bound order of the Court in a matter of this nature for nearly one year."

"This Court fails to appreciate the conduct of the Union of India and in particular the Department processing the freedom fighters' pension in the Home Ministry," the court observed.

The court directed the Joint Secretary to be present on the next date of hearing.

The court was hearing a contempt petition filed by Mishra alleging that the Ministry failed to comply with the March 2006 order directing the government to sanction his pension by February 2007 under the Pension Scheme with effect from 1985.
