A hospital attached to one of the premier medical colleges of the State, the Government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital (KMC), has left quite a few patients suffering with its sanitary issues. Proof that it could do with a good dose of cleanliness lies in the men’s toilet in the hospital near its entrance, which is in bad shape. During an inspection, it was evident that it isn’t the toilet alone that lacks cleanliness. The surgical block of the hospital, also has overflowing dustbins and is stained with paan spittle in its corners. And for reasons best known to the hospital authorities, the block’s elevator functions for only about three hours daily.
Anjalai, whose child was admitted in the hospital, said that the ambulance and cleaning staff fleeced the patients regularly and that they were forced to cough up the charges. Another parent, Maragatham, said that the ambulance staff charged between `300 and `500 for transporting children. It’s puzzling to know that drinking water facilities in the hospital are either concealed or absent. The Burns Ward of the hospital has a water cooler, but a security staff prevents anyone from using it, stating that it wasn’t working. A board near the pharmacy urges visitors to shun plastic. Ironically, a huge pile of used plastic containers can be found dumped near the pharmacy itself.
When asked about the lack of cleanliness in the hospital, Resident Medical Officer Dr Rajkumar said, “I have been going on rounds regularly and advising workers on the need for proper maintenance.” He added, “My doors are always open to patients who can come and lodge complaints against anyone. Only if I receive a complaint I can initiate action.”
