THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Alzheimer’s and Related Disorder’s Society of India (ARDSI) will screen the Amol Palekar film titled Dhoosar on May 24 at 6.30 p.m at Soorya International film society at Municipal Auditorium, Vazhuthacaud. The film, that has a theme related to Alzheimer’s Disease, one of the most dreaded degenerative and non-communicable disease of the century, is being screened to disseminate information about the disease, to get support for the patients and create a general awareness.Dhoosar is about the changing hues of a mother-daughter relationship as dementia affects the mother. The daughter in the film, Suniti, reads notes in her mother’s Suhasini’s diary - “Are these my slippers? How do I wear the blouse? What’s this? Who’s he? What do these words mean? Questions keep mounting … Those too will wither away… soon my eyes are not wet… the lens is clean… Still why is everything out focus? Why do I feel everything blurred?”Suniti also realises that Suhasini has crossed the bridge that connected her with their past; Suhasini is unaware of her present as well. Many layers of human mind and emotions are peeled off through a collage of past and present.While exploring different shades of human bonds, the story unfolds the starkness of dementia. About 35 million people all over the world are diagnosed with dementia. Equal number of people probably exist who are either unaware of their medical condition or are not being treated for the same. “If Dhoosar succeeds in igniting empathy towards these patients and some sense of obligation towards patient care, we will feel fulfilled,” said the makers of the film.
