What do you do if you come to know that someone who killed a girl for refusing to serve him a drink has been set free for lack of evidence? Sit at home and pray that you never meet such a person in your life. For some one who can pull the trigger on being refused a drink can get indulged in this pastime of his on the slightest provocation.
Stray thoughts but the gun could surely come out if you did not let him overtake your car or if you reacted at his misbehavior with someone who's with you? It could be anyone. And conversely if such thoughts have occupied some mind space of yours what do you do when you meet such a person? Allow him to do whatever he wants to do? Giving him the road could be easy but what about the second fear? And also how do you identify Manu Sharma in the man who's honking at you?
I'm saying Manu Sharma because the honourable judge of the trial court while acquitting this son of a politician said that the court was convinced that he had committed the murder of Jessica Lal but had no option but to acquit him for lack of evidence.
So who's to be blamed if the investigating agency did not gather the evidence?
Not Ram Jethmalani. His job is not to investigate but to exploit the system in favour of Manu Sharma's fraternity. The media by questioning his decision to defend Manu Sharma is according him the respect that a former Union Law Minister deserves. But don't forget how he treated the man who made him the law minister. He is talking about professional ethics and by doing so he has stated the obvious. That he is a brilliant criminal lawyer and that's it. And a criminal lawyer thrives only when criminals thrive. So had he chosen not to defend Manu Sharma how would have he faced his fellow professionals.
If it was not Ram Jethmalani it would have been some one else. The larger question is about the failure of the justice delivery system. Every one has the right to be defended and no one is guilty till proven so but then what was the need for the trail court to express its helplessness. Why did the High Court take suo moto cognizance of media reports?
Whatever may be the outcome of this case one thing is for sure that we can't just rely on prayers. The system has to evolve. You just can't let every one pass on the highway for fear of meeting a Manu Sharma.
Jethmalani or no Jethmalani the person who shot Jessica Lal dead can not be allowed to get away for lack of evidence. I chose to call him Manu Sharma just because the trial court was convinced. And there are many who don't believe in prayers. Other options would be explored.
