THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Under the BSUP project, which was allotted Rs 208 crore, 12,513 new houses would be constructed and 674 existing ones would be renovated, Mayor K Chandrika said. She said that construction of 5,830 houses and renovation of another 134 houses were already completed. She added that the Corporation had received the laurels after it ensured the participation of the local community in implementing the projects. ”In other states, slums were razed in the name of the project and the dwellers were relocated to far-off areas, paralysing their livelihood. But here, we provided them infrastructure and enhanced their living conditions without replacing them. That was the mainstay of our project implementation,” the Mayor said. Under the Rajiv Aawaz Yojana, which pertains to the construction of houses for slum dwellers and urban poor, the Vizhinjam harbour has been identified as the project site. The report of the pilot project was submitted to the Centre by the Mayor. The Mayor also held a discussion with the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister to exert pressure on the Central Government for an early release of the allocation. The award comprises a cash prize of ` 3 lakh, plaque and citation.
