New Delhi: Sri Lankan Navy on Tuesday attacked Indian fishermen near Katchatheevu, injuring one fisherman and damaging a boat.
In November 2014, the Sri Lankan Navy had arrested 14 Indian fishermen for allegedly trespassing into Lankan waters. Ten fishermen were arrested from Pudukkottai and four from Rameswaram.
That came just a few days after the Sri Lankan government made the big gesture of releasing five fishermen on death row for allegedly smuggling drugs. They were pardoned by the Sri Lankan government and were released after Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to then Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa where they agreed to transfer the fishermen to an Indian jail.
The five fishermen from Tamil Nadu released were Emerson, Augustus, Wilson, Prasath and Langlet. The case dates back to 2011 when the five fishermen set out to fish from Rameswaram and were apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy on the charge of possessing narcotics.
