CHENNAI : The city traffic police on Monday began a crackdown on vehicles, following the Supreme Court directive to enforce the ban on the use of sun-control or tinted films on window glasses of four-wheelers. The order came into force on May 4. The traffic police had then gave a four-day deadline beginning on May 17.On the first day after the end of the deadline, police registered 3,300 cases and collected a total fine of `3.3 lakh from those who had failed to remove sun-control or dark films from the windows of their four-wheelers.Traffic police said they slapped a fine of `100 per head on first-time offenders and removed the tinted films from at least 75 per cent of the vehicles after imposing the penalty. From Tuesday, the fine would rise to `300 for the second offence. The court in its order had said that the competent officer of the traffic police or any other authorised person shall impose fines on such vehicles for violating Rules 92 and 100 with effect from the specified date and thereupon shall also remove the dark films from the offending vehicles.
