Nigerian students in Hyderabad allege assault by locals, hold protests
Hyderabad Police dismissed the incident as a 'minor brawl' over a road accident

Hyderabad: African students in Hyderabad held protests on Saturday demanding action against a group of locals who allegedly assaulted three of them.

The incident, which took place two days ago, has been dismissed by the Hyderabad Police as a "minor brawl"over a road accident.

This comes at a time when there are widespread protests in Bengaluru over the alleged assault and stripping of a Tanzanian woman student by a mob.

One of the Nigerian students, Orolade Ibidola, said the incident had occurred in Hakimpet area when some local men passed comments as he was returning home from a religious place.

Ibidola claimed that when he sought to know the reasons for their comments, one of them pointed a gun at them and the other flashed a knife.

He said he called the police and that they did turn up for an hour. Suddenly one of those gathered shouted "thief" and they all started beating him up, he added.

However, Banjara Hills Police Station Inspector P Murali Krishna told PTI that it was a "minor brawl" between a Nigerian and a local youth following arguments over a road accident.

"We have registered a case under IPC Section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 341 (wrongful restraint) against the local youth following a complaint by the Nigerian youth," he said.

The police officer said local residents too have filed a counter complaint against the Nigerian accusing him of assaulting one of them.
