KOCHI: The National Highway Protection Council (NHPC) will organise ‘quit toll day’ at Kumbalam toll plaza on Quit India Day on Tuesday. A rally of hundreds of vehicles from Edappally will reach Kumbalam and boycott toll as part of the agitation, said C R Neelakantan, general convener, NHPC.Besides various organisations under the umbrella of NHPC, many of the vehicle owners will also take part in the agitation. “It is against the attitude of the government to privatise the national highway (NH) under the cover of BOT and to evict people for the widening of NH that the agitation is organised,” said C R Neelakantan. The NHAI authorities record only a small portion of the revenue, he said. After three months, toll collection will be entrusted to a private firm through tendering. It is based on this decreased collection that the quotation from private players will be invited for toll collection, Neelakantan said.
