New Delhi: In a bid to streamline the city's traffic and further augment the available resources and manpower, Delhi Traffic Police has carved out a new traffic district and also created 10 new traffic circles in the national capital. The creation of a new district and 10 new circles will ensure better supervision and utilisation of traffic personnel.
The National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi was so far divided into five traffic ranges, which were further split into 10 districts and 43 traffic circles for purposes of traffic management. "It was observed that some traffic circles did not have continuous boundaries and Traffic Inspectors could not cover the opposite points of the circles to monitor the traffic situation and exercise proper supervision.
"Thus, far off areas were neglected. Resultantly, it was also difficult to ensure and check the presence of traffic staff," said Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Anil Shukla. There was a need to constantly focus on and work out remedial measures for areas where the risk of fatal accidents is high.
It was also found necessary to logically deploy staff in the vulnerable areas and brief them regularly on remedial measures to achieve desired reductions in fatal accidents, he said. But the jurisdiction of some circles was extremely large and it was not possible for the Traffic Inspector to cover all the vulnerable areas, he added.
Considering the above and in the interest of effective traffic management and reduction in fatal accidents, it was decided that one new Traffic District, Outer District, and 10 new circles -- Alipur, Mangolpuri, Nangloi, Janakpuri, Tuglaq Road, Barakhamba Road, Sangam Vihar, Sukhdev Vihar, Saket and Mandawali -- have been carved out from the 10 districts and 43 circles.
The necessary notification has been issued and adequate staff posted in the newly-created traffic circles, which have started functioning with immediate effect, said Shukla.
