CHENNAI: The need for liver and kidney transplantations in India has always been in demand. Children and adults suffer from peculiar conditions which require both liver and kidney transplantations simultaneously. The transplantation team at Global Hospitals & Health city has achieved new milestones in the transplantations arena in the last few months. About four combined liver and kidney transplantations have been successfully performed.Twenty one paediatric liver transplantations were successfully performed in the past one year, the highest in any Indian centre. As many as 12 less than one-year-old children underwent successful liver transplantation.With the arrival of Prof Mohamed Rela, the pioneer in liver transplantation from Kings Hospital Institute, London, Global Hospitals & Health City has achieved many milestones in liver transplantations over a period of two years. The milestones include performing India’s first split and auxiliary liver transplantation and swap liver transplantation, which were conducted in the recent past.The transplant team at Global Hospitals and Health City is a multi-disciplinary unit of skilled and trained personnel from various disciplines. With team work as its strength, the team included transplant surgeons, transplant hepatologists (adult and paediatric), transplant anesthesiologists and critical care specialists, transplant experienced lab specialists, a team of well trained transplant coordinators and social workers, transplant nurses (theatre, ICU and transplant wards), perfusionists and technicians. To share their knowledge and experience, the anaesthesia and intensive care department of the Global Hospitals and Health city, in association with the Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists, conducted a one-day programme on ‘Fundamentals of transplant anaesthesia and intensive care’ at the auditorium of Global Hospitals and Health City recently.The scientific programme was designed carefully keeping in mind the latest developments in anaesthesia and intensive care aspects of liver, heart, lung, kidney and pancreas transplantations, which include topics of interest and practical relevance. The participants of the workshop continue their commitment to examine the most current challenges in transplant anaesthesia and intensive care. Conference organising secretary Dr K Ilankumaran, senior consultant in liver transplant anaesthesia and intensive care, Global Hospitals Health City, said “This CME was approved by the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University. It is the first of its kind in India, which would cover basic concepts of anaesthesia and intensive care management of liver, heart, lung, kidney and pancreas transplantation. The faculties invited are pioneers in the field of transplantation and this CME is suitable for post graduates, anaesthetists, intensivists, surgeons and physicians”
