CHENNAI: The Executive Committee of the Music Academy has unanimously chosen Mridangam maestro, Professor Trichy Sankaran, to preside over the 85th Annual Conference of the Music Academy to be held from December 15 to January 1, 2012. Sankaran will be conferred the Sangita Kalanidhi title on January 1, 2012. The committee also decided to confer the following awards during the event as well: Two Sangita Kala Acharya awards will be given to the vocalists Neela Ramgopal and Rama Ravi and two TTK Awards will be given to Mayavaram Somasundaram (kanjira) and TR Navaneetham (flute) on January 1, 2012. Finally, the prestigious Pappa Venkataramiah Award for violin will be given to Trivandrum Subramania Sarma. The newly instituted Natya Kala Acharya Award for Dance will go to Bharatanatyam exponent, Padma Subramanyam. This award will be given away at the inaugural function of the dance festival on January 3, 2012.
