Mumbaikars spent a peaceful night on Tuesday with the rains showing some signs of letting up.

Mumbai: Heavy rains continued to lash the city and the suburbs for the fifth consecutive day on Wednesday.

The downpour stopped on Tuesday night, but the weather office has predicted heavy to extremely heavy rainfall with gusty winds during on Wednesday.

Suburban trains on the Western, Central (main) and Harbour lines were running 15 to 20 minutes behind schedule, four long-distance trains were cancelled and three rescheduled. Other morning trains have left for their destinations, Railway officials said.

The Geetanjali Expressam, the Shatabdi Express and Ferozpur Express are the trains rescheduled. The Bhusaval Passenger, Tapovan Express, Deccan Express and Koyna Passenger have been cancelled. All incoming long-distance trains are running one to three hours late.

Rainfall recorded for the last 24 hours till 8.30 am at Colaba observatory in south Mumbai was 213.3 mm while at the Santa Cruz observatory it was 231.0 mm, the Met office said.

Most schools in the city remained closed for the third consecutive day. Weather officials said a depression on the east coast was weakening and was heading towards Mumbai. This would bring more rain to the city and Madhya Pradesh over the next few days.

Admission procedures for colleges and Class XI have been postponed by two days and all degree colleges and other educational institutions have declared a holiday on Wednesday.

The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai has warned citizens not to venture out and boil drinking water.

Fishermen have been warned not to venture into a very rough sea and a local caution signal LC-3 Flag has been hoisted along the Maharashtra-Goa coast, the Met office said.

28 people have been killed in Maharashtra since Tuesday due to heavy rain. Government has announced Rs 1 lakh each as compensation.
