Mumbai Gears Up For Navratri, Artisans Give Final Touches To Idols Of Goddess Durga | VIDEO

Close on the heels of Ganesh Chaturthi, which ended two weeks ago, Navratri is set to bring more festive cheer to Mumbai as the city is gearing up to welcome Durga. Idols of the Hindu goddess are being prepared as artisans give their final touches, following which they will be installed in pandals across the city. The festival this year will take place from October 3 to 12.

One such mandal, which has observed Navratri for 48 years now since 1977, said the festival is a means to promote communal harmony and social work among the youth and the different communities residing in the area.

“The festival is being celebrated here in Bhandup for last 48 years. It is a well-known festival. Social works are also carried out. People pray for their well-being. The ‘mandal’ is celebrating here since 1977, it has continued. More than 100 youngsters are associated, there is a good guidance by the senior citizens. We have also got award for social works,” said Vikas Patil, a member of the Bhandup mandal.

He added: “We worship Goddess Durga and promote communal harmony. We also organise ‘garba’. My message is promote unity among different castes and religions.”

Police tighten security near religious sites

Not only pandals and puja committees, but the police in the city is also on high vigil for the festival season. As part of their anti-terror preparedness, Mumbai police have stepped up security near religious sites and other crowded places across the city.

According to police, all senior officials have been asked to pay special attention to security arrangements in their jurisdiction. Considering the upcoming festivals and elections, mock drills are being conducted, an official said.

On September 27, mock drills were conducted at places like Bhaucha Dhakka, Barkat Ali Road, Iskcon temple in Juhu, and Zaveri Bazar to check their security preparedness. All temples in the city have been asked to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities as a precautionary measure, the official said.
