BANGALORE: Now, families of Safai Karmacharis, auto-rickshaw drivers, BPL card holders, BBMP paurakarmikas, slum-dwellers, senior citizens and widows who are on the pension roll can get treated at multispeciality and superspeciality hospitals in Bangalore and the expenses for the treatment will be borne by Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike.The much awaited BBMP’s-‘Vajpayee Arogyasri’ was launched here in the city at Malleswaram Grounds on Saturday by Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda. The proposed project promises to provide treatment for heart diseases, cancer, renal disorders, accidents etc along with surgeries and treatment of about 402 illnesses.After issuing smart cards for more than one thousand beneficiaries of this innovative project, Sadananda Gowda said, “This initiative is taken with an aim to help out socially and economically backward classes who fall below the poverty line to get treated at multi-speciality hospitals which is restricted only to the rich.”The beneficiaries of the card can get treatment of up to Rs 1.5 lakh at any multi-speciality hospital in the city. For special cases, Rs 50,000 more will be granted on request. Smart cards will be issued to more than 7 lakh families who are identified by BBMP in all its 198 wards. The cards will be issued to the heads of the family and along with its five members will be eligible to get the facility. The issuance of smart cards will be carried out at all 28 constituencies from January. Sadananda Gowda said he has reserved Rs 40 crore for the Vajapayee Arogyasri in the budget this year and is ready to release more if the need arises.Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Sharadamma said that the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike has reserved Rs 20.88 crore towards the payment of Rs 300 as premium for the health scheme per family.
