Muziris Heritage ProjectA first-of-its-kind project in the country. The project aims to restore Muziris and make it a major tourism attraction.The project has a funding of Rs 40 crore from the Central Government and Rs 170 crore from the state government. The major works under the project include creation of a water transportation circuit connecting the different heritage sites, construction of boat jetties and ferry boats, restoration of dilapidated historical sites, construction of museums and providing adequate infrastructure to the heritage sites. The project is slated to take a number of years but it will be opened in stages.■ Kuzhipully Beach RenovationThe project involves the beautification of the the beach and setting up of infrastructure, building of life-guard towers, shops and kiosks. The project is being undertaken by the District Tourism Promotion Councils (DTPC) with the help of KITCO.■ Mattanchery Conservation ProjectThe project is undertaken by the state government with the technical assistance of UNESCO. The project worth Rs 15 crore will be used for the restoration and renovation of Mattanchery and Fort Kochi. Some of the key schemes under the project include the maintenance and revitalisation of Mattanchery street, the improvement of Fort Kochi boat jetty and bus station, renovation of Mattanchery Palace and maintenance of Kalvathy canal.■ Promotion of Beach TourismBuilding additional infrastructural facilities for tourism promotion at Fort Kochi, Cherai and Munambam beaches. This is a part of the proposal to build similar facilities in 26 coastal sites in the state. The project is aimed at providing employment and other benefits to the fishing community in the area through the tourism project. It is being undertaken with the assistance of the Fisheries Department. The building of parks and other facilities on these beaches were undertaken utilising Tsunami Relief Fund.■ Onam Tourism Promotional ProjectThe programmes will be undertaken by the DTPC.This will include cultural programmes, fireworks display, illumination of Kochi streets and other facilities.The programmes will go on for 3 to 4 days during the Onam week.
