Chennai: The Madras High Court on Thursday upheld a recent order of Medical Council of India (MCI) refusing renewal of permission to admit students in the first year MBBS course for this academic year to Madha Medical College and Hospital at nearby Thandalam.
Justice K K Sasidharan said materials available on record supported the order passed by MCI on July 4 this year. Dismissing the petition filed by Loordhu Ammal Educational Trust which runs the medical institution, he declined to quash MCI's order.
During the hearing, Haja Mohideen Gisthim, senior central government standing counsel, relied on a report of an expert team which inspected the college and said the institution did not possess essential institutional and infrastructural
facilities to run a medical college, in addition to a number of other deficiencies.
The judge said the expert team had found several deficiencies that would seriously affect the capacity of the college to impart medical education and training to future medical officers. "It is not within the province of this court to exercise the power of judicial review to sit on an appeal over the report of the expert committee and the related decision taken by MCI on the basis such report," he said.
He added the issue involved the 'future of a noble profession and medical professionals' and students of the institution would start working as medical officers after graduation.
"Medical students should be qualified to function as specialists in various disciplines and for the said purpose, they should receive proper medical education," he added.
