Summary revision of electoral rolls for all municipalities from September 1 to 7; there would be 815 polling booths for 1,237 wards

The State election commission has set in motion the preliminary works for conducting the civic elections in the union territory and it has decided to conduct the summary revision of electoral rolls for all municipalities and commune panchayats from September 1 to 7.

State election commissioner Uddipta Ray told reporters on Wednesday that the draft rolls would be published on September 1 by the municipal commissioners and commune panchayats, who are designated as electoral registration officers, in their respective offices.

Ray added that the designated officers will receive the claims/objections and corrections from the public from September 1 to 9 at the venue separately notified. All those who had completed 18 years of age as on January 1, 2012 are to be included as voters, he added.

The transposition of names and entries due to change in residence in the same municipality/village panchayat can also be done.

The final electoral rolls would be published on October 5. The electoral rolls would be prepared on the basis of the voters list published by the election department.

Saying that the government had allotted Rs 4 crore for the civic body elections, he said the state election commission had sought more funds, besides Rs 9 crore for the purchase of new electronic voting machines (EVMs).

The UT comprised five municipalities (122 wards), 10 commune panchayats and 815 village panchayat wards. There would be 815 polling booths for 1,237 wards.

When asked about the High Court directive to hold civic polls before September 15, Ray said that the State election commission will inform the Government about the steps taken to hold civic elections, which will in turn submit a report to the High Court.

He revealed that the State election commission has asked the government to seek a deadline extension.

Revealing that the civic polls will be held in three phases, Uddipta Ray said that reservation for women would be based on the 2001 census as the ward-wise details were not available in the latest census.
