KOCHI: The Kochi Metro Rail Ltd is planning to speed up the land acquisition process by appointing retired government employees to manage field work, on a contract basis. These employees will be put on a year-long contract to complete the land acquisition process. The committee will select two units with 25 workers in each unit to implement the process through them. The 50-member team will be headed and assisted by deputy collector and two thahsildars. This team is bound to keep the land acquisition files. Authorities are planning to complete the land acquisition proceedings within a year. “The implementation of the land acquisition is planned to be done through contract workers, as government employees would take a long time to finish the process” said Tom Jose, Chairman, Kochi Metro Rail Ltd. However, the fears are high among the government employees. ”Such big project files have to be safeguarded properly and any case of irresponsible handling of these files by the contract workers can lead to a big problem. Hence, only selected responsible contractors should be given the contract to safeguard the files," says Anila, officer, Land Acquisition Department. However, District Collector Shaik Pareeth said, “There will be a proper file management system for the land acquisition. We are not giving the complete authority to the contract workers. Above the contract workers, there will be other authorities such as deputy collector and thahsildars. Therefore, the safeguarding of files will be done with absolute seriousness.”
