KOCHI: More than 300 patients are being brought to the mainland from Lakshadweep every year. With the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences taking over the Rajiv Gandhi Specialty Community Centre in Agatti, it is expected that the patients in the island will be able to be treated at their home island itself, said Lakshadweep Administrator J K Dadoo. After the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Lakshadweep Administration and AIMS, Dadoo said that this would go a long way in bringing down the huge expenses incurred.
The MoU was signed between Lakshadweep Collector Dr N Vasanth Kumar and AIMS medical director Dr Prem Nair. As per the arrangement, ten specialist doctors, six general medicine medicos and 50 paramedics will be on 24hour call at the Agatti island hospital.
