TIRUNELVELI: Suspecting foreign influence behind protests against the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP), the government has launched an IB probe into the functioning of six NGOs in Tamil Nadu and a notice has been issued to them seeking explanation on utilisation of funds received from abroad. The Home Ministry has sent notices to six Thoothukudi-based NGOs, asking them to explain the utilisation of the funds received under Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, a government source said without identifying the NGOs. Sources from a Thoothukudi-based NGO said a notice dated November 16 was sent to it by the Home Ministry, asking it to submit details, including auditor’s statement, source and purpose of funding, amount credited in banks, and communication between the donor and receiver, by December 2. “Though such notices are sent to us every year and we are given time to submit the details by December-end, the recent one was a special case,” the sources said.Meanwhile, anti-Koodankulam protestors thanked CM J Jayalalithaa for her letter to the PM on his statement over operationalisation of the plant, asking him to allay fears of the locals before taking any action.“We would like to thank you wholeheartedly for your very thoughtful statement... for standing up to defend the rights and interests of Tamil people and our progeny. You have proved once again... that you are truly a people’s leader and not an externally imposed CEO,” S P Udayakumar, coordinator of People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy, spearheading the protesters, said in a letter to Jayalalithaa.Meanwhile, thousands of protestors marched from Koodankulam to Radhapuram on Sunday, condemning Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s statement that KKNPP would become operational in a couple of weeks. The protestors demanded the closure of the plant. The rally was organised by the People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy.
