New Delhi: The tsunami is over but it’s aftereffects don’t seem to be withering. This could be the worst way to make a living, but people have no choice.
Several poverty-stricken fisherwomen in Chennai have resorted to selling their kidneys to eke out a living.
This has prompted the Tamil Nadu government to order a probe into the matter by Ponnery's Revenue Divisional Officer M S Sangeetha.
“These women were offered up to Rs one lakh for their kidneys by "organ brokers", who took them to far-off places like Madurai to perform surgeries to remove the organs,” official sources in Chennai were quoted by news agency PTI as saying.
It’s alarming, but there were times when the donors weren’t even paid half the amount offered and often ended up perennially ill after not taking proper post-surgery care, they said.
The donors told Sangeetha that they went took the extreme step because they had no other means of survival.
They added that there were also some wig exporters who wanted to purchase their hair.
Official sources said the government might order a full-scale probe after it got the report from the RDO.
"Stern action is being contemplated against hospitals and brokers indulging in illegal organ trade," PTI quoted the source as saying.
