Kerala: Minister, Transport Commissioner at loggerheads over making seat belts compulsory for passengers in the rear
Transport Commissioner Rishiraj Singh had recently made using seat belts for passengers travelling in the rear seat of a car compulsory after Union Minister Gopinath Munde's death

Thiruvananthapuram: A political storm is brewing in Kerala over making seat belts mandatory for passengers seated in the rear seats of car. Kerala Traffic Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan and Transport Commissioner Rishiraj Singh are at loggerheads over the issue.

While Singh had recently made using seat belts for passengers travelling in the rear seat of a car compulsory after Union Minister Gopinath Munde's death, Radhakrishnan is strictly against the decision calling it unfair given that 80 per cent cars in the state have no seat belts in the rear seats.

"I cannot agree with the idea of tormenting the passengers by insisting that they put on rear seat belts, when this mechanism is not available in their cars. We cannot implement this rule. Before rectifying such issues, how can we insist that the people obey a rule which has not," said the Minister defending his stand over the issue.
