Kochi: The talks between Congress and K Karunkaran have failed and the Democratic Indira Congress has decided to go it alone in the forthcoming Kerala Assembly polls.

The Karunakaran-led Democratic Indira Congress ruled out going back to the Congress or fighting the Assembly elections in Kerala on 'hand' symbol and said that the DIC-K would field candidates in all the 140 constituencies.

The 10-month-old party would face the polls on its own 'television' symbol, Karunakaran told a convention of party workers.

"Even if we have to go it alone in the polls, we will fight the elections on our own symbol," he said as his supporters clapped and cheered him.

On the ongoing talks with Congress leaders in Thiruvananthapuram, he said the DIC-K was being asked to fight the elections on the their 'hand' symbol. Even if the post of Prime Minister was offered, Karunakaran said, he would not leave his followers.

Karunakaran said he had read reports stating that he would be going back to the Congress, but it was not true.

"When the DIC-K left the Congress 10 months ago, everyone said nothing would happen if Karunakaran left the party," he said.

Anyone was welcome in the DIC-K, Karunakaran said. "Whoever helps the party, we will help them in return. But those who have hurt us, we will ensure their defeat," he added.

Karunakaran asked his supporters to work for the party's victory in the polls, irrespective of who was fielded as candidates.

Without naming either the Congress-led United Democratic Front or the CPI(M)-led LDF, he said none of them could come to power without the help of the DIC(K). "The party will have a decisive role in the formation of the next government."

DIC-K President and Karunakaran's son K Muraleedharan criticised the Congress, saying those who were talking of discipline now had remained mute spectators when he was defeated in the Wadakancherry by-election.

He also flayed the CPI, a partner of the Marxist-led LDF. The party's election committee would meet within two days to decide about the candidates to be fielded.
