BANGALORE: On the eve of 56th Kannada Rajyotsava, Lions Club International 324 D1 district observed a day-long celebrations on November 27 in Anjanapura, commemorating the formation of the state of Karnataka. A T Lokesh, chief - Kannada and culture division, lions club 324D1 inaugurated the celebrations.The event was presided by Vijaykumar Shetty, District Governor. Kannada patriotism was displayed in high spirits, as various peoples from all walks of life across the city came together to stage a medley of cultural programmes at the capital club resort on the outskirts of the city. During 1950, when India became a republic and many states and provinces were formed on the basis of language spoken in a particular region, the state namely mysore was formed with the Kannada speaking people of South India. Finally, the state of all Kannada speaking people was renamed as Karnataka on Nov 1, 1973.The celebrations were marked by hoisting the Kannada flag later followed by folk dance and other events. The participants from lions club family wore the yellow and red coloured dress marking the event all the more glamorous. From 1973, the day has been marked as a government holiday in Karnataka and Kannadigas take great pride in celebrating Rajyotsava with various festivities, cultural events and performances through out the state.A T Lokesh said, “Kannada is a classical language and has a rich history. The outsiders should learn to speak Kannada and should respect the language.” On the occasion, various cultural activities were performed besides holding a sports event for both men and women contestants.On the very day lions club conferred Rajyotsava award to four people who have excelled in their fields. Pramila Ayyappa made it for sports, Appagere Thimmaraju for folk and literature, Deepak for film and Ramarao V Raikar for social service. Later, the event saw thunderous applause when comedian Nagaraj Kote and others performed hasya sanje programme.
