SALEM: Spurned by the girl he loved, a man, who set fire to himself, clutched the 17-year-old girl even as he went up in flames, killing himself and the girl, near Mettur on Friday.The girl’s mother and brother, who tried to rescue her, also suffered burns.According to police, Priya (17), a B Com student in a private college at Mecheri, was staying with her parents Chandran and Indra at Pudhu Chinnakavoor near Mettur. As he was working in a brick kiln in Attur, Chandan used to come home only during weekends. In Chandran’s absence, Kannan (26), an electrician residing in Katti Nayakanpatti, Jalakandapuram befriended Priya and her family and used to make frequent visits to their house. He then proposed marriage to Priya, only to be turned away by the girl. Her mother, Indra was also opposed to the relationship as Priya was only 17 and moreover, Kannan was already married and had estranged from his wife barely three months after they tied the knot. However, Kannan continued to woo Priya, who repeatedly refused. On Wednesday night, when Priya, her brother Prakash (16) and Indra were asleep, Kannan walked into their house with a petrol can.After setting himself on fire, he grabbed Priya and held on to her. Indra and Prakash tried to save the girl from his clutches and suffered burns in the process. While Kannan died on the spot, Indra, Priya and Prakash were rushed to the Mettur GH and later referred to the Salem GH.On Thursday morning, Priya succumbed to her burns.
