New Delhi: The concept of Gandhigiri – popularised by Lage Raho Munnabhai - seems to be catching up fast at the most unlikeliest of places – jails.
In Mumbai’s Thane Central prison, 182 inmates will take an examination on the “Gandhian thought” on Tuesday.
The exam, called the Gandhi Peace Exam, is a part of a plethora of activities and programmes being co-organised by Bombay Sarvodaya Mandal, Gandhi Study Centre and Birla College to celebrate 100 years of Satyagraha.
The examination will cover life and times of Gandhi and questions will be based on his books based My Experiments with Truth and Gandhi Bapu .
The one-hour exam – that will comprise of 80 objective questions carrying 80 marks - will be conducted in English, Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati.
Prior to the exam, an intensive, two-week orientation exercise was organised where the prisoners were explained the Gandhian ideologies of non-violence and truth.
Sir Richard Attenborough’s internationally acclaimed film Gandhi was also screened.
Officials attached with the event say the idea is to evoke a “sense of regret” among the prisoners and make them realise the power of non-violence.
"Today, violence and terrorism is not a problem of a single nation, but it has become a global threat. The only solution to this violence, prevailing in India and abroad, lies in the philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi,” T R K Somaiya of the Mandal was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.
