KOZHIKODE: The measured silence of the Indian Union Muslim League top leadership in the T P Chandrasekharan murder case has raised many eyebrows among political circles in the state. Though rivals, IUML’s top leaders, especially Industries Minister P K Kunhalikutty, have not gone beyond expressing condolence messages. Rumours are rife among the party rank and file that leaders are playing it safe because of their political and personal commitments to the CPM counterparts. Party workers are confounded by the passive stance of their leadership on the current situation which they consider as an appropriate occasion to expose the CPM. Political commentator advocate Jayasankar attributed the IUML’s approach to the alleged understanding between Kunhalikutty and Pinarayi Vijayan. ``It’s true that the party rank and file demands strong action against the CPM. But Kunhalikutty is least interested in targeting Pinarayi as he owes much to the leader for saving him from the ice cream parlour case. Besides, there are reports of involvement of land mafia, which is closely attached to the CPM and the IUML. It was the CPM - led by state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan himself - which had launched an all-out attack against the IUML during the fifth minister controversy alleging that the party had taken an extremist path. Says author and activist N P Hafiz Mohamed: “IUML’s approach against CPM in the Chandrasekharan murder case is surprising. Other than making some blunt statements, they have not touched CPM yet. CPM men were also behind the attack against IUML activists Shukkoor of Kannur and Rafeeque of Chelakkara. Projecting these cases, they should have been aggressively campaigning against the murder politics of CPM. But, it is not there.’’
