The villages of Vembayam and Kanyakulangara in Kerala are considered to be a rich agricultural area. Depending on the season, you can find an abundance of fruits at the places. A group of women decided to venture into a food business for the occasion of Onam, which proved to be extremely profitable to them.
The women used to make these sweets, pickles and Onam dishes only for their children and families during the occasion. However, this time they shared their recipes with the Onam market. As per Local18, they are called Vembayam Kudumbashree CDS and they sell pickles and Onam delicacies in the market. On the occasion of Onam, they went to the Kanyakulangara market to sell their products.
According to more information on the business, they sold a variety of pickles along with several types of Onam snacks like alanga, jaggery varatti and pakkavada. They also sold some native vegetables. The stuff was bought by locals as well as street vendors, as no chemicals were used in its preparation.
Talking to Local18, the women shared how their hard work did not go in vain this year. They decided to continue this business in the coming years, they added. Local18 shared a video, showing the stall where they have meticulously set their products. It includes big jars of pickles and packs of assorted snacks.
Celebrated in Kerala, the festival of Onam took place on September 14, this year. It is celebrated during the Malayalam calendar month of Chingam, overlapping with the Gregorian months of August–September. The festival celebrates the Vamana avatar of Lord Vishnu and the homecoming of Emperor Mahabali. It is considered a harvest festival celebrated through boat races, flower rangoli, tiger dances, Tug of War, mask dances, music and worship. For Malayali Hindus, it is the time of the new year.
