New Delhi: Bollywood's popular stories might start with 'hate at first sight' and later move on to usual business, but filmmakers are gradually beginning to experiment, if within a set framework, with the retelling of the 'happily ever after' story book romance. In the end, love will not triumph every time.
Here's my pick of the five film endings that tried to tell a different story within the limitations the filmmakers faced while balancing realism with fantasy.

I Me Aur Main: John Abraham's latest offering does not conform to the ending that is expected of a film starring a mainstream hero. While the entire film story rides high on clichés, it's the ending that took me by surprise. Even with ample drama, the climax is a coming-of-age message. A self-centered man who makes the informed choice to father a child and later takes on the responsibility without entering into a wedlock makes for an interesting ending. This round goes to director Kapil Sharma who tries to give his own modern twist to the film's end.
Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu: Shakun Batra breaks Bollywood's most tested stereotype 'a girl and a boy can never be friends' in his romantic comedy. Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor centre their interest in each other around companionship. There's a distant promise of something happening in future but I wouldn't count on it. The two choose to move on. Now how many times have you seen that in a mainstream pot-boiler?
Rockstar: Imtiaz Ali's previous works 'Jab We Met' and 'Love Aaj Kal' were conventional love stories with a modern approach. His last venture 'Rockstar' is all about romance and love but unlike his previous films the lovers don't end up together. The death of Nargis Fakhri is a void that Ranbir Kapoor is left to deal with.
Pyaar Ka Punchnama: Luv Ranjan's directorial debut was not just a novelty in terms of the storyline but also the unpredictable ending of the film. The film that brashly talks about relationships and the notion of love takes a very practical turn towards the end. Despite the constant women bashing in the film, there is still some hope that the two in love would somehow stick together. But Kartik Tewari's final decision to move on is a surprise.
Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji: Madhur Bhandarkar's first stint at making a romantic film did not go in vain. The director gave a new twist to the end of the film. While you expected the three men Ajay Devgn, Emraan Hashmi and Omi Vaidya to finally make peace with their love interests, the three men at the end dump the girls and vow to never fall in love.
