BHUBANESWAR: Even as there is no breakthrough in the hostage crisis, the Assembly on Thursday unanimously passed a resolution appealing to the Maoists to release the two Italian captives. The House also witnessed noisy scenes with the Opposition Congress members demanding clarification from Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on his remark against the Centre over the hostage crisis. The resolution moved by the Chief Minister said, “This House expresses deep concern on the issue of abduction of two Italian nationals. The House unanimously appeals for the safe release of the foreigners. The House also shares the agony and anxiety of family members of the two Italian nationals.” When the resolution was moved, the Opposition Congress members, who earlier favoured passing of the resolution, demanded a clarification from the Chief Minister on his statement against Union Home Minister P Chidambaram.Instead of giving any clarification, the Chief Minister moved the resolution and it was passed by voice vote even as the Opposition members were protesting in the well of the House.Pandemonium broke out as soon as the question hour began. Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh sought a clarification from the Chief Minister about the alleged non-cooperation of the Centre to resolve the hostage crisis.“While the whole world is concerned about the safe release of the two abducted Italian nationals, the Chief Minister is busy playing politics,” Singh said.Cong r e s s membe r s trooped into the well of the House shouting slogans against the Chief Minister. The BJP members immediately joined the Congress and disrupted the proceedings.Pratap Sarangi, Independent, alleged that the question paper leak was a deliberate attempt by the Government to divert attention of the people from the hostage crisis.Meanwhile, a number of ministers have resigned on moral grounds even though they are remotely linked to the incidents for which they were sacrificed. However, the Chief Minister who is presiding over the Council of Ministers is not taking moral responsibility for any of the incidents, Sarangi remarked and demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister.Launching a counter attack on the Congress, ruling party members including Damodar Rout, Ananta Das and Sanjay Dasburma said the Congress had no moral right to demand the Chief Minister’s resignation when their Government at the Centre is neck-deep in corruption. After the 2G scam, the CAG has again nailed the Centre in the coal block allotment scam running into Rs 10.70 lakh crore.Rout proposed to move a censure motion against the Centre in the wake of the coal block allotment scam.
