HYDERABAD: Three city hospitals, which were recently caught violating environmental norms, on Thursday agreed to provide a bank guarantee of Rs 10 lakh and give a written undertaking to the effect that they would clean the mess within a week. The managements of the three hospitals came up with this assurance at a legal hearing, Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board officials said. The three hospitals, KIMS Hospitals at Minister Road, Care Hospitals at Banjara Hills and Medwin Hospitals at Nampally, were found to be violating norms prescribed by the Environment Protection Act 1986, during a surprise inspection carried out by the APPCB last week. It was found that liquid waste of KIMS was directly being let out into the Hussainsagar. All three hospitals did not have sewage treatment facilities to separate faecal matter and medical waste. Neither did they tie up with any Effluent Treatment Plant to disinfect the waste they generated. More alarming was their treatment of radio active waste. Following this, the APPCB has decided to conduct inspection of all hospitals in the city with 50 beds and more. This will begin from December 12. “Most of these hospitals have the same system of disposing the waste. They let it out into the public drain. Any hospital caught doing so will face strict action from the government,” an official said.
