New Delhi: Drag-flicker Sandeep Singh, who made a return to the India squad in the team's disappointing campaign during the FIH Hockey World League Round 3 at Rotterdam last month, has been left out of the 48 probables named on Tuesday for the upcoming Asia Cup.
Hockey India announced the names of the players selected to attend a preparatory camp for the 9th Asia Cup - with the selectors naming seven goalkeepers, nine defenders, 12 midfielders and 20 forward for the camp at Bangalore's SAI Centre. However, Sandeep's flop show at Rotterdam saw him being axed.
Malaysia will host the event at Ipoh from August 24 to September 1 later this year, while the training camp will be conducted from July 16 to August 16. Selectors BP Govinda, Savitri Purty, chief coach Michael Nobbs and scientific adviser Jason Konrath, along with government observer Harbinder Singh, picked the probables.
India are placed in Pool B along with Korea, Bangladesh and Oman whereas Pakistan, Malaysia, Japan and Chinese-Taipei are in Pool A. Winners of the tournament will also be assured of a place in the 2014 World Cup as the continental champions.
