HC slams schools for nursery interviews
HC?s directive about discontinuing nursery interviews of children comes as a huge relief to thousands of parents.

New Delhi: There is good news for parents getting their children admitted into nursery this year. The Delhi High Court is against the way schools have been conducting interviews of children and parents.

Monica Trivedi, a parent, had a tough time getting her older daughter admitted to a good school two years back.

This year her younger one is to appear for her nursery interviews and the stress is already building.

The child has been going to a play school for the past six months to train for the all-important interview.

The High Court?s directive about discontinuing nursery interviews comes as a huge relief to Monica and thousands of other parents like her.

"It?s a very good decision because such interviews are very stressful," Monica Trivedi said.

Apart from fielding uncomfortable questions on their financial status, and filling in nine-page long questionnaires in some cases, the biggest grouse parents have is that schools decide who to call for interviews completely arbitrarily.

"They asked me how much I earn. I do not understand how relevant these questions are," Salil Choudhary, a parent said.

Schools say they have a genuine problem at hand ? parents want their children to go to schools, which have a good brand value. The seats are limited but the number of applicants run into thousands.

So if not by interviews then how do they decide which child they should admit and who they should reject? And that's the question they have to find an answer to till December 19 and submit it to the High Court, else the court has threatened to ban any sort of interviews for nursery admissions effective from January 2006.

One of the alternatives being suggested is drawing out lots for interview calls, though the Yashpal committee appointed by the Central Government had recommended a complete ban on interviews. But schools did not take the suggestion seriously then.

Now with the Delhi High Court taking a tough stand on the issue, schools in the capital will be forced to make admissions in nursery much simpler.
