A video of Shinde Sena MLA from Maharashtra’s Buldhana, Sanjay Gaikwad, snatching a policeman’s lathi and assaulting a group of men at a public event has emerged. Gaikwad, who had recently claimed to have shot dead a tiger, found himself embroiled in yet another controversy as the video went viral on Friday.
The video shows Gaikwad thrashing a man amid a scuffle. According to a report in The Indian Express, Gaikwad admitted that he was the person who can be seen bashing the man. He said he was “forced to take action as the men were being unruly”, adding that the incident occurred during a Shivaji Jayanti procession on February 19.
“This occurred on the day of Shivaji Jayanti. They were men who were drunk and had smoked ganja. They were about to assault women with a razor. I stepped in on time and gave them a thrashing to stop what they were about to do,” Gaikwad told Indian Express.
Gaikwad has consistently found himself embroiled in controversies. In a recent social media video, he asserted that he had hunted a tiger in 1987 and had been wearing a tooth from the slain animal as a pendant.
Following this, the forest department took action on Saturday, confiscating the accessory and registering a case against him under the Wildlife Protection Act, as confirmed by an official.
