CUTTACK: The Orissa High Court on Friday disposed of the PIL filed by advocate Nishikanta Mishra of the Nationalist Lawyers Forum on the liquor tragedy without passing any orders.  The division bench comprising Chief Justice V Gopalagowda and Justice BN Mohapatra held that no order was required to be passed on the PIL in view of the commencement of the Commission of Enquiry into the tragedy. The State Government has already stated that it would take action against the persons involved as per the findings of the Enquiry Commission and affidavits have been filed by the Collectors of Cuttack and Khurda districts along with the Commissioner of Excise Department on steps taken to extend assistance and benefits to the families of victims, the bench observed. The PIL had sought direction for a CBI probe into the incident while praying for adequate compensation to the families which have lost their sole breadwinners to the tragedy. The tragedy have claimed 34 lives in Cuttack and Khurda districts.  Earlier, acting on a PIL writ petition,it had directed the Excise Commissioner to take appropriate measure to curb sale of illicit liquor. The collectors Cuttack and Khurda had submitted that many steps have been taken to rehabilitate the  families of the victims under various schemes.
