Vishal Bhardwaj's 'Haider' has once again brought to the fore the grim reality that exists in Kashmir.

Vishal Bhardwaj's latest 'Haider' has once again brought to the fore the grim reality that exists in the picturesque Kashmir. Terrorism ridden, the beautiful valley has been subjected to wars, torture and destruction for years now.

While the state provided the best locales for shooting films in the 1960s, over the years, due to the political crisis brewing in the state, filmmakers in Bollywood started avoiding the state. In the recent past, some filmmakers have made films with Kashmir and militancy as the backdrop. Some have been commercial films while some have made rounds of various international festivals.

Here's a look at the films that highlighted the problems that Kashmir has been plagued with in the past few decades.

Mission Kashmir- Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s ambitious ‘Mission Kashmir’ was shot in actual locations in Srinagar and featured Hrithik Roshan as a militant and Sanjay Dutt as a senior police officer. While the film narrated the story of a father and his adopted son, militancy formed the background of the story.

Lamhaa- Directed and written by Rahul Dholakia, the film depicted the struggle of the Kashmiris and their resistance to the Indian army and their regime in the state. The film featured Bipasha Basu, Sanjay Dutt and Kunal Kapoor.

Shaurya- Perhaps the only film that narrated the story in Kashmir from the Army’s perspective, ‘Shaurya’ was military courtroom film directed by Samar Khan. The film featured Rahul Bose, Kay Kay Menon, Minissha Lamba and Javed Jaffrey in key roles.

Sikander- Directed by Piyush Jha and produced by Sudhir Mishra, ‘Sikander’ narrated the story of a young school boy who is forced to take up the gun due to certain circumstances. The film featured child actor Parzan Dastur in the lead role.

Harud- Amir Bashir’s film made rounds of various international film festivals. Set in strife-torn Kashmir, Harud is the story of a frayed family, struggling to stay together as they deal with the loss of a son.

Haider-Vishal Bhardwaj’s latest on paper is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’ but on screen narrates a lot more. The film gives a stark depiction of the people of the state and how innocent are often victimized by the army.
