Meerut: Army soldier Mohammed Arif, who was reunited with his wife Gudia under controversial circumstances after being released from a Pakistani prison, has remarried in Uttar Pradesh, almost a year after her death.
Taufiq, the man whom Gudia had married while Arif was held in Pakistan for almost four years, also remarried recently.
Arif had said after Gudia's death on December 31 last year that he would not marry again and would devote his life to bringing up Mateen, the child of Gudia and Taufiq.
Though he could not forget Gudia, he could not spend the rest of his life on memories alone, Arif said after marrying Shaista of Chidoli village in Ghaziabad on Wednesday. Gudia's father Immamuddin and her brother Nadeem participated in the marriage.
Arif had returned to his Army unit shortly after his marriage with Gudia but was captured by the Pakistan Army after the Kargil conflict of 1999.
As there no information about his whereabouts, the Army declared him a deserter. Arif's family in Mundali in Uttar Pradesh then got Gudia remarried to Taufiq. The Army headquarters later received information that Arif was in a Pakistani jail. He was released and sent back to India in 2004.
After reaching his village, Arif got back his wife, who was pregnant with Taufiq's child, after the controversial intervention of Muslim clerics. Gudia later died after delivering a dead child at an army hospital in Delhi.
