Two persons, including a woman, were killed when the car in which they were travelling was hit by a goods train at an unmanned level crossing at Nallamanarkottai in Dindigul district on Wednesday.
While one-year-old Sathya had a miraculous escape, her mother Saranya (25) and Murugesan died on the spot. Manoharan (31), husband of Saranya, who sustained grevious injuries, was admitted to a private hospital in Dindigul. Police said the couple from Dindigul, along with one Murugesan, were returning after attending a marriage function at Nallamanarkottai near Dindigul in the morning. Manoharan was at the wheel.
While they were crossing an unmanned level-crossing near Nallamanarkottai the wheels of the car got struck in a pit near the track. Meanwhile, Manoharan noticed a Dindigul-bound goods train from Karur was approaching towards their car.
“But, before they inmates could get out of the car, the train hit the vehicle,” said the police officer. A passer-by who witnessed the incident immediately alerted the 108 ambulance service. Manoharan who was injured in the accident was rushed to a private hospital by the 108 personnel. The railway police have registered a case. When Express contacted Sujatha Jeyaraj, Divisional Railway Manager, Salem, she said, ”We have decided to close the unmanned railway crossing in places where it was not required. There are also plans to hold a coordination meeting with the Dindigul Collector N Venkatachalam in this connection.”
