KOCHI: Having had enough of ‘action’, Armed Reserve personnel these days are opting for the safe haven of being Personnel Security Officers (PSO).In an interesting development, there has been a great demand for PSOs among the officials in the AR camp.In fact, some of them do not even want to return to AR camp and are willing to serve higher officials for a long period. The rush for PSO duty is mainly to escape from the tedious and tiresome routine duty in the AR camps, the officials say.“We receive a lot of recommendations for the post of PSO, listed by the PRD Department for High Court judges.Earlier, when a request was given for a PSO, the superior officer in the camp decided which of the personnel was to be deputed for the post. Now the system has changed and the PR Department of the High Court itself suggests a name to appoint a particular person as the PSO, a senior official at the Ernakulam AR Camp said.A PSO has to do duty only on alternative days.Above all, he can escape from all the compulsory drill and exercise routines, the officer said. Finally, the PSO will get a transfer to the local police station when the judge retires or gets a transfer,” the officer said.Top officers in the camp said that when a High Court judge retires or when the term of a PSO ends, most of them request the officials in the High Court to make recommendations to the officers in the AR camp to allow them another term as PSO.Thus his name figures in the list and we have to depute him. There are many personnel in the AR camp who have been PSOs for over 5 years. However, officials in the High Court deny incidents of recommendations, but admit that some judges suggest the names of persons whom they are familiar with and have experience with PSO duties.“It is better to depute a person who is familiar with the job than a fresher,” officials said.Meanwhile, a PSO who does not want to be named said the job is not relaxing as claimed by senior officers
