Bangkok: French President Jacques Chirac to visit India and Thailand on February 17 to 19, becoming the first French leader to make a bilateral visit, a senior Thai official said Thursday.

Chirac is scheduled to go on to India on February 19, where he will stay until the following evening. He last made an official visit to India in 1998.

His visit to Thailand comes at the invitation of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, 78, who celebrates the 60th anniversary of his coronation this year.

Spanish King Juan Carlos is scheduled to visit Bangkok from February 21-24 but no details were available about his trip.

Chirac will hold talks with Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on February 18 and attend a banquet hosted by the king that evening.

Thaksin has twice visited France, once in 2003 and most recently in October last year. The two nations signed an "action plan" in May 2004 aimed at boosting cooperation.
