CHENNAI: The authorities, while giving approval for buildings in Chennai Metropolitan area, should strictly follow the NBC rules (National Building Code of India) and Development Control Rules inorder to ensure fire safety, said Bhola Nath, DGP Director, Fire and Rescue Services, while addressing the Fire Detection Summit India 2012 in the city on Friday.When asked if the buildings in Chennai followed the listed fire safety norms, the Fire and Rescue Services Director side stepped the question and said, “We are only an advisory authority. We recommend the executive authorities concerned to see to it that the norms and guidelines are followed.”He also added that every year the listed buildings should renew their licenses and it was the duty of the executive authorities to ensure that.The summit was organised by the Institution of Fire Engineers (UK)-Southern India Branch Chennai. About 300 delegates from all over India took part in the deliberations. D Balachandran, president – IFE, UK, Southern India Branch, said, “As a body we are focused on providing inputs on in-depth engineering and other technological advancements in improving fire safety through early detection. We are also involved in educating the users and the public about it.”There were debates and discussions on early fire detection systems and other standards, besides the code of safety and detection during the summit.
