CHENNAI: A couple posing as members of UN Human Rights Commission conned nine persons in Tamil Nadu by promising them lucrative jobs in Europe and collecting Rs 28 lakh.As per a complaint they filed with the Police Commissioner on Friday, Andreas and Mercy from Alwarthirunagar posed as UNHRC members to take away their money and passports. The couple allegedly collected amounts ranging from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 6 lakh from each of the complainants, promising them jobs in Bible printing units in Europe.They showed photographs of themselves with Collectors and police officials to lure them. According to Prakash of Pudukottai, one of the complainants, “We met the couple through a common friend. They promised me a job with a monthly salary of `2.60 lakh. Since March 2010, I deposited the money in instalments in their account and also submitted my passport to them. I arranged the money by selling my ancestral property.” He further alleged that the duo also cheated 20 other persons from Kerala. The complainants visited the couple several times and signed many documents. However, after a few months, the couple went missing.Siddha Student Found DeadA Siddha student, who was working as a house surgeon with a private hospital in Kumaran Nagar police limits, was found dead inside his room on the hospital premises on Friday.Police said, when a nurse went to the room of T John (26), a final year student and a native of Kanyakumari, on the first floor to wake him up, she got no response.John, who was found lying unconscious on the floor was then taken to the Royapettah GH, where he was declared brought dead. 4 Held for AssaultFour persons were arrested for assaulting a bank manager Parthasarathy (48) and his driver, Kumar and fleeing with his car at Ayanavaram, on Friday. Police said, the manager of the Thiruvallur branch of a nationalised bank, was on his way home in his car when the incident occurred.
