Kolkata: Former Indian football captain and reliable defender Sudip Chatterjee died in a city hospital on Monday. He was 47.

One of the finest Indian footballers, Chatterjee was suffering from nervous problems for long. He was hospitalised on Monday after he choked on some food. He died in the evening.

Chatterjee, who enthralled the city's Maidan (the football grounds here) in the 1980s, captained India from 1984 to 1989.

Chatterjee's over Rs 200,000 transfer from East Bengal to Mohun Bagan in the mid-1980s raised many eye-brows while he later coached Mohammedan Sporting too.

He played mostly for East Bengal and was considered one of the few soccer players who could match up to international standards.

Chatterjee's death was mourned by the entire football fraternity in Kolkata.

"He was a footballer of the highest stature. He is one of the finest players. He was like my elder brother and not just a co-player," said former footballer Sisir Ghosh.

Football coach Amal Dutta under whose supervision he became a central midfielder from a stopper said his transition to the position of central midfield was possible because of his skills.
