CHENNAI : A day after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh about Karnataka’s failure to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, PMK founder S Ramadoss has flayed the Karnataka government for jumping the gun and saying there is no need to convene a meeting of the Cauvery River Authority. He attacked Karnataka Water Resources Minister Basavaraj Bommai for making such a statement and said such a stand was meant to ensure that TN does not get any water from Cauvery.“There is only 79 ft of water in the Mettur Dam. This is not enough to ensure a healthy kuruvai harvest. Only if water is released on or before June 12 can the kuruvai harvest be ensured. Karnataka is merely using TN as a drainage area when its four dams are filled,” he said.He urged the Prime Minister to disregard the stance taken by the Karnataka and convene a meeting of the Cauvery River Authority to ensure Tamil Nadu’s riparian rights over the river. He also said the PM must unilaterally ensure the release of water to TN in the event that the Karnataka CM fails to take part in the meeting.
