BANGALORE: Pace Global is an energy consulting and management company which hosted the PACE Forum 2011 at the University of British Columbia (UBC) campus in Vancouver. Their latest project is SUT (Sustainable Urban Transportation), a task that demanded strong contextual understanding, imaginative ability to see a future scenario, lifestyle trends and creative rigour to produce various personal mobility solutions. They believe that the urban population is estimated to increase immensely by 2030, causing incremental challenges in terms of pollution, congestion, energy-fuel scarcity, driving behaviours, etc.On this note, seven teams comprising Design schools and Engineering institutes, collaborated to bring out the 2030 SUT vehicle designs.Out of all the teams that took part, a team from NID and its partnering engineering institutes won the first place for Industrial Design, Market Research and Overall Best Collaboration Award. The team consisting of Vipul Vinzuda, coordinator- faculty, transportation and automobile design; Dr Ranjit Konkar, coordinator- PACE NID, head-industrial design and Bhaskar Bhatt, coordinator-faculty, product design, participated in this global project and presented the design showcasing the process, various concepts and the final design proposal of the vehicle called PEEL.On July 28, 2011, NID design students presented their SUT project work, where they took the jury through the journey of design development phases such as: contextual research, ideation sketches, user persona and their day in life scenario and animations of design. There were many other design institutes that participated in this forum from various parts of the world such as Monash University, Australia, ITESM Monterey, Mexico, Hong - IK University, Korea, Tongji University, China, University of Cincinnati USA and few others.Vipul Vinzuda from the winning team said, “We selected Ahmedabad as our context reference city. We believe that it is a megacity and is developing at rapid speed.” PACE and all its supporting partners gave special consideration to the Indian context, transportation scenario, lifestyle and the market. PEEL got comments for its possibilities of being practically viable with relevant material applications in parts making it affordable and enhancing green-electric mobility solution.Vipul Vinzuda, further added, “NID participated at PACE for the first time and it was truly an amazing experience. It feels really great winning three out of four awards. We won the Best Industrial Design Award, Best Marketing Research Award and the Best Overall Collaboration Award. The Collaboration Award is really important to us because we had to talk to various people from different parts of the world, with different time zones which was also a big challenge for us. We worked on it during all hours of the day.”
