VELLORE: In a bid to bring the traffic problem in the district under control, authorities cleared temporary encroachments from 550 shops near Vellore Old Bus Stand and Arni Road on Tuesday. In a joint operation by Vellore Corporation, Revenue Department, Police Department and Highways Department, a major traffic diversion has also been introduced in the fort city on a pilot basis. In a recent review meeting held in this regard, the issue of encroaching roadside shops was raised. This was followed by an announcement during the week warning the public that temporary infringements like sheets and banners outside shops be removed at the earliest. On Tuesday, clearing operation began with two JCB machines in these two places. Around 500 encroachments in four streets, including a major business centre at Chunnambukara Street near Vellore’s New Bus Stand, were cleared. It is said that the violations here were left unnoticed for over seven years now. On Arni Road, the encroachments were cleared at 50 shops in a two km stretch between Jayamurugan Theatre and Bagayam Bus Stand.The removal of encroachments will continue on Wednesday on the remaining main roads such as Arcot Road, Katpadi Road, Makhan Junction and other places.
