BHUBANESWAR: An engineer with the East Coast Railway was arrested on Tuesday for duping his friend of Rs 18 lakh. Prakash Chandra Subudhi, a senior engineer (electrical) with ECoR, had taken the money from Saroj Malia, a resident of Kapileswar, to invest in a Nalco project. Neither did the project had taken shape nor did Subudhi return the money to Malia. The railway engineer had a private firm called Indus Pvt Ltd in IRC Village of the City. Although he cannot be part of a private enterprise, Subudhi was its managing director. Police said he had convinced Malia to invest saying he had bagged a contract from Nalco for ash pond development. He had projected high returns on the investment. In February 2010 when Malia gave the money to Subudhi, the former was assured of a double return on his investment in six months. However, even after a year, nothing came in Malia’s way. Since the Nalco project never took off and Subudhi did not return his money, he lodged a complaint with Nayapalli Police. The police raided the office of Subudhi and seized important documents. Police are trying to locate some of the staff to understand the dealings of the firm.
