HYDERABAD: The end of admissions for Eamcet 2011 has sent private engineering colleges into a panic mode as the second phase of counselling hardly made any difference on the number of students enrolled.Out of the 59,610 students, who exercised their options in the second phase, 15,028 fresh allotments were made.At the end of second phase of engineering counselling on Saturday, the number of unfilled seats continues to be 84,971 putting a large number of engineering colleges in a tight spot.Another 80,000 seats are also lying vacant under management quota leaving a total of 1.6 lakh vacant seats as against the total number of 3.1 lakh seats across the state.“In financial terms, a magic figure of 300 students is required to run any engineering college successfully.As per my knowledge, out of the 696 colleges in the state, only 150- 170 colleges have the figure,” says KVK Rao, general secretary of the Consortium of Engineering and Professional Colleges Management Association.The dismal figures will not only lead to severe revenue loss for many new engineering colleges, but also puts the future of senior students at stake.Close to 250 colleges are likely to suffer heavy losses due to reduced enrolment which would also affect the jobs of junior faculty.“The college managements are unlikely to issue no objection certificates to senior students opting to shift to other colleges.As for the freshers, who wish to cancel their admissions, will not get back the amount deposited,” warns Rao.The fate of senior students of these colleges hangs in balance as options available to them are very few.
